On March 18, the Chengdu Customs District released statistical data indicating that Sichuan's foreign trade imports and exports totaled 166.27 billion yuan in the first two months of this year, ranking eighth nationwide and first in the central and western regions, registering a year-on-year increase of 5.9 percent.
"The data shows that mechanical and electrical products continue to be the mainstay of Sichuan's foreign trade, demonstrating rapid growth in both imports and exports," stated a leading official from the Statistical Analysis Division of the Chengdu Customs District. The official highlighted that the electronic information industry stands as the pillar sector with the strongest innovation capability and the most robust industrial foundation in the Sichuan-Chongqing region. In recent years, the two places have accelerated efforts to consolidate and strengthen industrial chains around fields such as integrated circuits, new display technologies, and smart terminals, positioning the Chengdu-Chongqing region among the top ten global clusters for the electronic information manufacturing industry.
The robust industrial support has driven the expansion of foreign trade. Data shows that Sichuan's exports of mechanical and electrical products reached 80.54 billion yuan in the first two months, representing a year-on-year increase of 17.2 percent and accounting for 78.1 percent of the province's total export value during the same period. Among these, exports of integrated circuits, laptops, and tablet computers reported a year-on-year increase of 38.1 percent, 47.7 percent, and 23.2 percent, respectively, with tablet computer exports retaining the top position nationwide by scale. In terms of imports, the value of mechanical and electrical product imports reached 50.28 billion yuan, marking a year-on-year increase of 16.9 percent. This scale accounts for 79.7 percent of Sichuan's total import value for the same period, representing a 3.5 percentage point increase from the previous year.
In terms of other products, some of Sichuan's distinctive goods are picking up pace in their global outreach, leading the nation in export scale. Among these, exports of fish oil, lemons, and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxides all hold the top position in the country, while lithium hydroxide, caviar, and baijiu (Chinese liquor) are all ranked second nationwide. During the same period, imports of consumer goods amounted to 2.85 billion yuan, registering a year-on-year increase of 2.9 percent, and the import scale of fresh salmon and shrimp both secured third position in the national rankings.
In recent years, Sichuan has continuously strengthened its efforts to cultivate foreign trade entities and actively pursue international market expansion initiatives. Statistical data reveals that the number of enterprises in the province with actual import and export performance in the first two months increased by 4.8 percent year on year. Among them, the number of private enterprises rose by 5.7 percent year on year, accounting for 88.2 percent of the total, with imports and exports surpassing 60 billion yuan. During the same period, foreign-invested enterprises recorded imports and exports totaling 93.52 billion yuan, marking a year-on-year increase of 35.5 percent.
In terms of major trading partners, Sichuan's imports and exports with ASEAN, its largest trading partner, reached 37.1 billion yuan in the first two months, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 7.2 percent. Specifically, the import and export trade with Viet Nam and Malaysia rose by 29.2 percent and 2.7 percent year on year, respectively. Sichuan's trade with its second-largest trading partner, the United States, totaled 35.69 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 42.4 percent.
