On March 19, the reporter learned from the Department of Public Security that since China implemented the 240-hour visa-free transit policy on December 17, 2024, the Chengdu port has recorded a total of 171,000 foreign national entries, marking a year-on-year increase of 46.3 percent. Additionally, there have been 214,000 foreign entries bound for Sichuan, a year-on-year rise of 72.6 percent. These figures indicate a significant regional synergy effect driven by the 240-hour visa-free transit.
A leading official from the Exit and Entry Administration Corps of the Department of Public Security introduced that to better support the province's high-quality development and high-standard opening-up and to facilitate the travel, business negotiations, and exchanges of foreign nationals in Sichuan, the province has implemented a series of flexible and convenient policy measures and continuously optimized policies such as port visas, visa-free transit, unilateral visa exemptions, and mutual visa exemptions. Provincial departments, including the Department of Public Security, the Department of Culture and Tourism, and the Department of Commerce, have collaborated to enhance the convenience for foreign nationals in Sichuan in such areas as travel, payment, communication and accommodation. These efforts have effectively promoted exchanges between Chinese and foreign nationals and driven the development of related industries like tourism, transportation, and catering.
In addition, the province has established a "star chain" model of foreigner service stations around scenic spots, industrial parks, and residential communities, providing a highly efficient, integrated platform that combines services from multiple departments and spans various fields. Efforts have been made to optimize visa services for foreign tourist groups at the Chengdu port, establish a collaborative mechanism with cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, encourage more regions to share their tourism resources to create a scaling effect, and enhance the level of openness and develop the export-oriented economy, in a bid to further unlock the benefits of the visa-free policy.
