At 00:35 on March 21, the world's first 700-megawatt high-efficiency ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized bed power generating unit was successfully connected to the grid at YEIG Honghe Power Plant, marking the commencement of the plant's trial operation phase. The project utilizes the world's largest circulating fluidized bed boiler in terms of single-unit capacity, independently developed by Dongfang Boiler, a subsidiary of Dongfang Electric Corporation. This achievement represents a major breakthrough for China in the field of clean coal power technology.
Circulating fluidized bed boilers embody a high-efficiency and clean coal-fired power generation technology. They offer advantages such as robust fuel flexibility, high combustion efficiencies, reduced pollutant emissions, and strong load regulation capabilities. Prior to this achievement, the world's largest circulating fluidized bed boiler with a capacity of 660 megawatts was first put into operation at the Pingshuo Power Plant in Shanxi in 2020. Similar to the recent milestone, this earlier unit was also independently developed by Dongfang Boiler.
Throughout the construction of this project, Dongfang Boiler assembled highly experienced teams, including technicians, project managers and service personnel. These teams ensured full-cycle coordinated management, spanning every phase from research and design to project execution, installation and post-deployment testing and debugging services. The project accomplished an exceptional milestone by completing the construction phase—from the first concrete pouring to the unit's grid connection—in just 21 months, setting a new record for the shortest construction period for units of its kind. Simultaneously, through the synergistic application of several internationally pioneering technologies in the unit, the project teams successfully developed key components such as the world's widest furnace for a biomass circulating fluidized bed boiler without external beds that meets international standards, achieving an estimated annual savings of approximately 175,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon emissions by around 500,000 tons. A person in charge from Dongfang Boiler stated that the successful grid connection of the project provides a replicable and scalable experience for coal-fired power generation companies in China and globally, particularly in the realm of energy conservation and environmental protection.
