"Cultural Roots of Shu, Sichuan Meets the World" China in the Eyes of Sinologists: A Cultural Tour in Sichuan Series Kicks off in Chengdu
Updated: 2025.06.25

On June 22, the "Cultural Roots of Shu, Sichuan Meets the World" China in the Eyes of Sinologists: A Cultural Tour in Sichuan series event kicked off in Chengdu. Several sinologists shared their views on Sichuan's cultural identity, expressing their anticipation for the event to enhance cultural exchanges.

Giant Pandas and Sichuan Opera's Face-Changing

Natural Ambassadors to Tell Stories of China

Agustín Alepuz Morales, a Spanish sinologist and science fiction translator, is no stranger to Chengdu or China's sci-fi circles. Having visited Chengdu multiple times, he is well-acquainted with this event's Aba Prefecture itinerary. "When translating Alai's Chen Ai Luo Ding, I kept wondering what Aba really looked like—now I've finally made it here," shared Agustín Alepuz Morales. He said that the snow-capped mountains and villages described in the novel are utterly captivating, and he considers it an honor to visit these places in person.

When discussing Sichuan's "Splendid Tianfu, Leisurely Sichuan" tourism brand, Morales remarked, "I didn't initially understand the word ānyì—it wasn't until I came to Sichuan that I learned it means 'comfort'. Just like the province itself, where even the culture carries this unhurried elegance." He particularly recognized the cultural value of elements like giant pandas and Sichuan opera. "These are not sterile labels, but tangible embodiments of Sichuan's living heritage—where pandas and face-changing performances inherently act as cultural ambassadors, naturally telling China's stories to the world."

Polish sinologist and translator Jan Jakub Zywczok, another frequent visitor to Sichuan, echoes this sentiment. "Every time I come to Sichuan, I tell my friends about it and recommend they come to see the giant pandas," said Jan Jakub Zywczok, noting that he has become a Sichuan promoter and often mentions to his friends "how wonderful Sichuan is".

Jan Jakub Zywczok shared, "This event is my first in-depth encounter with Sichuan's natural scenery and rural life." He highlighted that the province radiates warmth—its people naturally embody optimism and vitality. "Their hospitality generates such a lively atmosphere; it's truly touching," he said.

Samah Mohamed Abdelkader, a sinologist from Tunisia's University of Carthage, is visiting Sichuan for the first time. Her passion for giant pandas and Sichuan cuisine has filled her with excitement for the journey ahead. "I have friends from Sichuan, and thanks to their recommendations, I fell in love with Sichuan cuisine. And now, I'm finally going to see pandas in person," Samah Mohamed Abdelkader said. She added that over the years, Sichuan writers have introduced many literary works depicting Sichuan, which has made her even more eager to visit. Through this trip, she hopes to understand Sichuan more profoundly and uncover more of its facets.

Sichuan's Natural Splendor

A Living Canvas for Cultural Discovery

French sinologist and "Chinese Ambassador Award" recipient Jean Pegouret first fell in love with the country during his initial visit 35 years ago. "That experience transformed my path—I moved beyond pure scientific research to immerse myself in Chinese civilization, studying its culture, geography, language, and philosophy," he recalled.

During his journey to understand China, Jean Pegouret made multiple trips to Sichuan, immersing himself in the province's cultural tapestry and breathtaking landscapes. "In Europe, we often refer to Sichuan's Mount Siguniang as 'China's Alps'—an apt comparison that transcends mere elevation," remarked Jean Pegouret. "What truly connects these regions is their shared traits: snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers." The French scholar views Sichuan's landscapes as cultural catalysts: These natural wonders nourish deeper cultural exploration, becoming common ground that promotes harmonious co-existence among more people.

Jean Pegouret's journeys have taken him across Sichuan's natural crown jewels—Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong, and Mount Siguniang. Throughout his expeditions, he has witnessed firsthand the Chinese government's conservation efforts to safeguard both ecological wonders and traditional culture. "Over the next week, we will experience the natural scenery and traditional culture of Aba, learning about the region's natural landscapes, culture, literature, and history," said Jean Pegouret. He noted that this event will build a bridge to enhance exchanges between China and other countries and regions. "Such bridges are invaluable, especially in today's world filled with uncertainty."

"As a sinologist, lifelong learning is extremely important. It is through learning that I keep getting to know and discover the true features of China," said Paul Zilungisele Tembe, Director at the SELE Encounters Cross-Civilization Communication Strategies in South Africa and recipient of the 18th Special Book Award of China. He added that this trip to Sichuan is another learning journey, hoping to gain deeper insights into the province's unique culture, urban development, and biodiversity through on-the-ground visits.

As a renowned South African scholar, Paul Tembe has been studying China for over 20 years. He has become a South African expert on China and has published works such as Research on Chinese Civilization, using his writings, research, teaching, and academic activities to help more young South Africans understand China and get closer to it.

Paul Tembe noted that both South Africa and Sichuan are regions inhabited by multiple ethnic groups, boasting rich and multifaceted cultures. Sichuan is the homeland of giant pandas—this has always been one of Paul Tembe's strongest impressions of the province. Seeing pandas was a highlight he eagerly anticipated for this trip. During this visit to Sichuan, Paul Tembe will embark on a cultural exploration of Aba Prefecture and other areas alongside renowned writer Alai. He expressed particular interest in discussing topics such as "how literary works can advance cross-cultural communication" with Alai throughout their journey.

Paul Tembe was equally impressed by Sichuan's modernization efforts, particularly how the province preserves its rich traditional culture amidst the modernization drive—an aspect he is keen to study and observe closely.
