The World Games 2025 Opens in Chengdu, and Shen Yiqin Attends and Declares the Games Open

On August 7, the 12th edition of The World Games (TWG) 2025 opened in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. State Councilor Shen Yiqin attended the opening ceremony and declared the Games open.

Kirsty Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), delivered a speech via video. Gao Zhidan, President of the Organizing Committee of TWG 2025 Chengdu and Director of the General Administration of Sports of China, and José Perurena López, President of the International World Games Association (IWGA), delivered speeches. Wang Xiaohui, Secretary of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of Sichuan Provincial People's Congress, Shi Xiaolin, President of the Organizing Committee of TWG 2025 Chengdu and Governor of the People's Government of Sichuan Province, Tian Xiangli, Chairperson of the CPPCC Sichuan Provincial Committee, Yu Lijun, Deputy Secretary and Head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee, attended the opening ceremony.

Under the night sky, Chengdu Tianfu International Convention Center dazzled with a radiant display of lights, its architecture glowing and shimmering in a magnificent spectacle. At 20:00, the opening ceremony of TWG 2025 Chengdu commenced. University students from Chengdu delivered a spectacular cultural and sports performance titled "Rendezvous of Colors", electrifying the atmosphere at the venue.

At 20:06, the March-in of Athletes parade began. Accompanied by upbeat melodies, participants from 116 countries and regions entered the venue in sequence, greeted by thunderous applause from spectators. The Chinese delegation entered last as the finale of the parade, igniting waves of thunderous applause and cheers throughout the venue.

Following the athletes' parade, eight guards of honor marched in firm steps, escorting the national flag of the People's Republic of China into the site. Subsequently, the flag of the IWGA, the flag of the IOC, and the flag of the Organizing Committee of TWG 2025 Chengdu entered in procession. All stood up and sang the national anthem of the People's Republic of China. The Five-Starred Red Flag ascended steadily atop the mast, billowing in the evening breeze.

In her video message, Kirsty Coventry highlighted that this gathering of global athletes in Chengdu vividly embodies the unifying power of sport across cultures and boundaries. Remarking on the successful hosting of TWG 2025 Chengdu, Kirsty Coventry praised the Chinese organizers for their professionalism and hospitality, and thanked the Chinese Olympic Committee, China Sport Authorities, local and national authorities for their unwavering support, and the people of Chengdu and the volunteers for all their enthusiasm and contributions. TWG provides athletes across diverse sports disciplines with a unifying platform to celebrate athletic excellence, while contributing to the broader development of the Olympic movement. May this edition become a memorable and successful event, and may all participants enjoy their moments in Chengdu.

In his address, Gao Zhidan stated that with the cordial attention from President Xi Jinping and the strong leadership of the Chinese government, coupled with the effective guidance of the IWGA and the collective support of the global sports community, a uniquely distinctive and spectacular sporting event is about to commence. As the world's top-tier stage for non-Olympic and emerging sports, The World Games embody humanity's most expansive exploration of athletic possibilities and trendiest pursuit of sports. José Perurena López said in his speech that we gather in Chengdu tonight to inaugurate the 12th edition of The World Games, celebrating the extraordinary unifying power and inspirational force of sport. He expressed thanks to the hosts—the Chinese government and people, the City of Chengdu, and the Chengdu 2025 Organizing Committee— for this magnificent opening ceremony, and for their vision and their tireless efforts in organizing TWG. Chengdu is not just the host; it is also the heart of these Games. From this day forward, all athletes stand ready to shine on the global stage. They will use their excellent performances to make the most resounding statements and inspire generations of athletes.

At 21:20, Shen Yiqin announced the opening of The World Games 2025 Chengdu. Warm applause broke out across the venue.

Athlete representative Li Zhiqin, coach representative Anthony Violante, umpire representative Angelika Eiermann, and international sports federation officials representative Sondre Gullord took the oath in turn.

Beneath the "Tianfu Roof", the gala performance, titled "Splendor Woven Together", and the TWG theme song "Countless Wonders" unfolded in succession, masterfully intertwining sporting disciplines with Chinese culture and Ba-Shu elements, vividly embodying the event's slogan: "Boundless Sports, Countless Wonders". Amidst the anticipation of thousands, the TWG main cauldron was ignited, designed as a water-shaped spout rising from the lake. Through this fusion of fire and water embodying cutting-edge scientific artistry, the ceremony conveys the luminous light of dreams to a global audience.

The World Games, hosted by the IWGA, represent the largest and highest-level international multi-sport event for non-Olympic sports, held quadrennially. The current edition of TWG features 256 events in 60 disciplines across 34 sports, with nearly 4,000 registered athletes competing. The Chinese delegation will field 321 athletes competing in 152 events spanning 50 disciplines across 28 sports.
